Treatment
Braces & Aligners
Braces and clear aligners gradually move teeth into better alignment, improving how the teeth meet and how they are cleaned.
Treatment Overview
What braces & aligners involves
Orthodontic treatment applies gentle, controlled force to move teeth into a better position over time. This can be done with fixed braces attached to the teeth, or with a series of removable clear aligners.
Fixed braces stay on throughout treatment and are adjusted at intervals. Clear aligners are removable and are changed for a new set at regular stages, but only work while they are actually being worn.
Which approach suits you depends on what needs to be corrected, how much movement is involved, and your own preferences. Not every case can be treated with aligners.
Who May Need It
Common reasons to consider this treatment
These are general indications, not a diagnosis. Only an examination can establish what is appropriate in your case.
- Crowded teeth, or teeth that overlap and are difficult to clean between.
- Noticeable gaps or spacing between teeth.
- Upper and lower teeth that do not meet comfortably when biting.
- Teeth that are rotated or sitting out of line with the others.
- A bite that causes uneven wear on particular teeth.
- Alignment concerns in a teenager or adult who would like them assessed.
Assessment
How Dr. Anshul evaluates your case
- Dr. Anshul examines the alignment of your teeth, how your bite meets, and the health of your gums and supporting bone.
- Photographs, impressions or scans and radiographs are used to record the starting position and plan the movement required.
- Any decay or gum problems are treated before orthodontic treatment begins.
- The suitable options, the expected duration and what each involves are explained so you can choose.
- Where a case calls for specialist orthodontic expertise, an appropriate specialist can be coordinated.
Treatment Process
Step by step
A general sequence. Your own plan is confirmed after assessment.
-
Assessment and records
Examination, photographs, scans or impressions and radiographs to record the current position and plan treatment.
-
Treatment plan discussion
The available approaches, expected duration and what each requires from you are explained before you decide.
-
Fitting braces or issuing aligners
Fixed braces are bonded to the teeth, or your first sets of aligners are issued with instructions on wear.
-
Regular adjustments
You attend at intervals so progress can be checked and braces adjusted, or the next aligners issued.
-
Completion
Once the planned movement is achieved, braces are removed or aligner wear is completed.
-
Retention
Retainers are provided to hold the corrected position. Retainers are a permanent part of treatment, not an optional extra.
Benefits
What this treatment can achieve
- Teeth that are easier to clean, particularly between crowded or overlapping teeth.
- A bite in which the upper and lower teeth meet more evenly.
- Reduced uneven wear caused by teeth meeting incorrectly.
- Improved appearance of the teeth and smile.
- Clear aligners are removable for eating and cleaning.
Treatment Timeline
What to expect, generally
- Orthodontic treatment takes time because teeth move gradually. Most treatment is measured in months rather than weeks.
- Minor alignment corrections may take several months; more involved cases commonly run beyond a year.
- Aligner treatment depends heavily on wearing the aligners for the hours advised each day. Reduced wear extends treatment.
- Retainers are worn after active treatment to hold the result, and this continues long term.
- An estimated duration for your own case is given at the planning stage.
Aftercare
Looking after your teeth afterwards
General guidance. You will be given instructions specific to your treatment.
- Clean thoroughly around braces or before reinserting aligners; alignment appliances make plaque easier to trap.
- With fixed braces, avoid very hard or sticky foods that can damage the brackets or wires.
- Wear aligners for the number of hours advised each day, removing them only to eat and clean.
- Attend adjustment appointments as scheduled to keep treatment on track.
- Wear your retainers exactly as instructed after treatment; teeth drift back without them.
- Continue routine dental check-ups throughout treatment.
Questions
Braces & Aligners — common questions
Teeth move gradually, so treatment is measured in months. Minor corrections may take several months, while more involved cases commonly run beyond a year. An estimate for your case is given after the assessment.
No. Aligners suit many cases but not all, particularly where larger or more complex movements are needed. Whether they are appropriate for you is determined at the assessment.
Yes. Teeth tend to drift back towards their previous position, so retainers are a necessary part of treatment rather than an optional extra. How and how long to wear them is explained at the end of treatment.
No. Adults are treated as well, provided the gums and supporting bone are healthy. The assessment establishes whether treatment is appropriate.
